This book is nominated for picture book of the year. It is a beautiful story with a strong multicultural theme, however, it is also important because it is about trying to fit in. This can happen to any child under a myriad of circumstances. It is important for children to feel comfortable and safe and accepted. This story explores those emotions. The contrasts between the two girls and the things that they have in common are beautifully illustrated by the pictures in this book. In many ways, you do not even need to read the words to understand the story, which apparently is the ultimate aim of an illustrator.
There is a sadness to this book, but through this sadness comes and understanding and in the end, there is hope. The book is a beautiful and appropriate story for this day and age.
Freya has illustrated some beautiful books before and she is no stranger to the winners’ circle. She will come close again with this one.
