Nomination for Picture Book of the Year: One Step at a Time by Sally Heinrich (Text: Jane Jolly)

one step at a time

Oh boy, bring on a happy story, please!  The illustrations are the key with this one. I have gone through too many boxes of tissues reading these children’s books this year. The first page with its beautiful colours, lush forest, bananas and touches of pinks and yellows, plus the happy elephant, lead you into a false sense of security. The next page there’s a big boom, then all goes dark. Thankfully, as one knows, a picture book is more than three pages, we know that there will be more to the story and hopefully a happy outcome. There is, but not without struggle and a couple of twists which make you feel even more emotional. The pictures are amazing, though more in a cartoon format than a painting. It is a relevant, timely story but I am ready now for a few laughs….
