Nomination: Early Childhood Book of the Year – Mr Huff by Amy Walker

Deeper than your average ‘Once upon a time’ book but with an occasional injection of humour and a lot of irony, this book traces a day or so in the life of Bill. He is not having a good time of things and as the day progresses, he is getting angrier and angrier until the “huff” above him gets so big that he becomes angrier still and hopes for him to go away. They reach a point when things are way too much. Then the Huff starts to cry and the mood changes with some surprising results. This book works on several levels.  Older children may appreciate the underlying messages more than the little ones. A thoughtful story.
